Contest Goals

We believe that producing new plays is essential to the life of the American Theatre. We hope to encourage the development of new work that is truly relevant to the life of specific communities; new work that encourages playwrights to write for the "hometown" theatres;  new work that doesn't have to "redefine the theatre art" or "recolor the universe" but work that may tell old stories in new ways or new stories in old ways; new work that tells the audiences about the themselves NOT about the artist.  David Moberg, Editor, NoTechTheatre

Contest Guidelines

(Please read Guidelines carefully! Please do not submit if your work does not "fit" the guidelines.)

Submission fee of $15 is required for each hard-copy and/or electronic script submission.

Entries MUST BE a full length play --- a minimum of 75 minute running time.  Musicals, one-acts, and children's plays WILL NOT be considered.

Subject Matter - Comedies preferred; serious plays that inspire hope and courage; real plays about real people in the real world.  Plays that appeal to family audiences.  Plays that have excessive profanity and explicitly adult content and situations will NOT be considered.

Casting - We are looking specifically for plays that can be realistically performed by college age performers. While most plays/stories have "older" characters, plays in which all or most characters are "older" characters may not be appropriate for this contest.

Adaptations are not encouraged.

Prefer cast size 3 to 10 characters; single set.

Plays that have had workshop productions and/or staged readings in colleges or universities are eligible for submission.

Entries must be original work and cannot have been published, cannot not have been produced professionally, and cannot be under any binding  contract.  Rights to the submitted work must be owned and controlled by the author.

Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain are the full responsibility of the playwright.

Only first place will receive a monetary prize.  Additional plays may be recommended for full production.  If selected for full production, standard royalties for four to six performance run MAY also be paid by producing theatre organization. Plays may be recommended for production in mainstage and blackbox theatre spaces.
